Job description
Vickerstock are working in partnership with a manufacturing firm on the appointment of a Health, Safety & Environmental Officer.
As an HSE Officer, you will provide technical advice to areas of the business involved in chemical use and processing, such as metal cutting, surface treatment, product preparation and coating. Your key focus will be to drive improvements in chemical handling, storage, use and disposal, whilst ensuring compliance with REACH Regulations.
In your new role:
- Develop and enforce health, safety, and environmental policies, including those for chemical handling and surface coating processes
- Monitor compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, particularly regarding chemical safety and hazardous materials
- Oversee general risk assessments and conduct detailed assessments for high-risk activities, including chemical hazards, radiation exposure, and surface coating operations
- Investigate accidents or incidents to identify causes and implement preventive measures
- Deliver specialised training on chemical handling, first aid, PPE use, and emergency procedures
- Minimise environmental impact through proper waste disposal, emissions control, and compliance with licensing requirements
- Maintain records and prepare reports on health, safety, and environmental issues, including regulatory compliance and ECHA submissions
- Maintain and improve management systems for ISO45001, ISO14001, and ISO50001 accreditation
- Build strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders, and liaise with HSE NI and NIEA on REACH and IPPC licensing
- Address chemical purchasing, usage, and disposal with cost considerations
- Manage KPIs to drive performance improvements
- Drive improvements using the PDCA process for projects of all scales
What you will need to succeed:
- 2+ years' experience working in HSE role or 5+ years' experience in a chemical focused role
- 3rd Level qualification in a relevant field (ie. Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Chemical Engineering)
- NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Safety & Health or IEMA Environmental Certificate (or equivalent)
- Experience working with external agencies such as HSE NI, NIEA, and auditors
- IT skills (MS Office)
- Full clean driving license
Desirable (it would be great if you have this, but don't worry if you don't):
- Train the Trainer
- Qualification in handling hazardous materials and chemicals (HAZOP, HAZID, etc)
- Aerospace experience
- Knowledge of IPPC licensing
- Climate Change / Net Zero planning experience
