Why did you decide to become a Recruitment Consultant?
Recruitment isn’t something I had planned to do initially; I saw an ad in the paper for a Graduate job in Recruitment and went for the interview back in 1997 and I haven’t looked back. I’ve worked in recruitment almost half my life, I started at a very young age! I am so glad I saw that ad that day as recruitment is in my DNA. I don’t think I would want to do anything else.
Did you specialise in a particular area? What were your motivations to choose Professional Services as your sector?
I specialise in Professional Services, throughout my time in recruitment I have worked in quite a few sectors but I have always been drawn to the Professional Services field. I enjoy dealing with the candidates as I understand their roles and what the challenges are for them. When I speak to the clients across all sectors, I know the skill set they require to fill the jobs but it is more than that, you have to match the candidate to the company culture and having worked with a number of employers for so long I know exactly what they are looking for. That is the part of the job I love the most is finding not only the right fit in terms of skill set but the perfect culture match.
And what sort of roles are in demand at the moment?
Throughout my sector the support roles are in demand. There has also been a rise in Marketing and Business Development roles as companies are finding there is more competition in the market place and they need to get as much market share as they can.
How did Covid-19 impact your sector?
Covid has brought the element of flexible working into the sector, which has proved to be very positive for the candidates as they are able to balance their home and work life. The hybrid and remote models have enabled companies to attract a better calibre of staff as it cuts out travelling, so candidates who would not normally apply for the roles due to location are now applying for roles. I have seen such an increase in this over the last 12 months. Clients have benefitted from this as they have gained strong candidates.
The amount of jobs that are coming into my sector has increased over the last 12 months there has definitely been a growth in vacancies.
Clients using virtual interviewing has really made life so much easier for candidates and clients. Candidates no longer have to take time off work to attend interviews and clients are now able to be more flexible in terms of times that they can interview ie: later in the evening.
What do you see upcoming within your sector?
Since the pandemic candidates and clients now want different things and companies have adapted their overall business strategy to meet these demands, which means professional services roles have never been more important. They really are the back bone of every company as these roles were still required throughout the pandemic. The number of jobs I have now on my system is so exciting and all I can say is I look forward to the future of my industry.
