Job description


I am currently recruiting for a Technical Manager in Bedfordshire. MUST HAVE FOOD EXPERIENCE.
Up to £70,000 Depending on experience

Job Purpose
To deliver the Food Safety, Quality and Animal Welfare function mission, complying with all relevant legislation and the requirements of all our clients.
The job holder will be directly accountable for the efficient management of the FSQ departmental objectives, according to the standards agreed by the business, whilst developing the team and quality culture within the department. The job holder will be responsible for protecting at all times the integrity of the Company through positive and constructive actions and attitude. Responsible for the production of Safe, Quality Product. Adherence to Legal and Approved Standard Requirements, and Animal Welfare. The job holder is accountable to the Site Operations Manager, with a dotted line to the Group FSQ Manager.

Key Duties and Responsibilities / Objectives

  • To deliver the FSQ Departments key business objective, to be "recognised as industry leaders in Food Safety, Quality, Innovation and Animal Welfare."
  • Promote a Culture of Food Safety in the site. This will include ensuring the Group Food Safety Mission is appropriately communicated and validated across the site. Active Role to be played in the Food Safety Week, and owner of the Food Safety Culture Procedure on site. All Levels.
  • QMS. The implementation and continuing improvement of the Quality Management System on site. This includes a responsibility for the EQMS system on site, the management of all records, audits, check sheets, Procedures, Manuals, SOP`s, Customer Complaints/Corrective Actions. The QMS system is to be reviewed and improved via the site and Internal Audit system. Ensure the Agreed Systems are implemented across the site. All Levels.


  • Food Safety. Implementation and review of the Food Safety Management System on site. Lead the HACCP team and coordinate meetings, reviews and improvements where necessary. Maintain (Opp) pre req. programmes including (but not exhaustive) Pest Control, Supplier Approvals, Services Approvals, Calibration, Traceability. All Levels.
  • Complete and maintain a site Microbiological/Chemical Testing Programme which verifies and validates the sites Quality System, and ensures compliance with Customer, Standard and Legal Requirements. Implement corrective/preventative actions in the event of non-compliances. All Levels.
  • To Deliver the Animal Welfare Vision - to be recognised as having the Highest Industry Animal Welfare Standards in our Livestock Sourcing, in our Facilities and in our Staff Training, Behaviours and Culture.
  • Including responsibility for documenting the Welfare Team Meetings, completion of Welfare Audits, and exceeding customer and legal requirements. All Levels.
  • Management of the Site Hygiene System. Ensuring the site is equipped with the Training, Equipment and Chemicals to ensure required levels of hygiene are met. Maintain levels of training within the hygiene team. Update all required systems and paperwork along with chemical Supplier. Including but not exhaustive, Documented Cleaning Programme and validation, MSDS sheets, Cleaning Audits, Titration Tests, Management of Hygiene Team - All Levels.
  • To ensure adequate Training is ongoing in the FSQ Team. All roles to be defined via a job description. Job roles, tasks and responsibilities to be documented via a maintained skills matrix, that form the basis of a training plan. Clear succession plan to be in place based on Job Roles and Skills Gaps. Ensure onsite training is adequate and documented for Hygiene and SOP training across all departments. To take responsibility for the performance and development of those individuals reporting directly to the role holder, ensure performance related feedback and actions. Ensure all team members adherence to company policies, legislative requirements and customer standards. All levels.
  • Maintenance plan to be in place and documented to ensure product safety and legality. This includes (but not exhaustive) working with the maintenance team to have a preventative maintenance plan, approved suppliers, commissioning procedures, ongoing verification audits. All Levels
  • Organise and Document on Site Meetings. Including monthly management meetings (or equivalent), Quarterly KPI/Target reviews, Annual Management Reviews, HACCP Meetings. Communicate Site targets to all staff members. All Levels.
  • Organise and manage site Visits and Audits. This will include customer visits where necessary. Ensure a working knowledge and compliance with audit standards including
  • BRC, Red Tractor and Customer Standards. Compliance with unannounced schedule required. This includes the closing out of all non-compliances in the agreed timeframes- Site Audit Ready. All levels
  • Responsible with the Site Operations Manager for the Food Defence Programme. Responsible for the Documentation of the Food Defence System, including organising Training for all members, upkeep of the documentation, completion of the vulnerability assessment and close outs. All Levels.
  • Ensure Communication with all Regularity Bodies, including the FSA and Trading Standards. Maintain a working relationship with the FSA and close out any actions raised in the agreed timeframe
  • Keep abreast of legal requirements, the latest industry guidelines and scientific information, and implement in the site
